WHAT WE DO
The Environmental Stewardship Committee recognizes the importance of living sustainably; that is, living in balance with the earth while recognizing the need to share resources with all of God's creatures, including generations not yet born.

The committee seeks to foster an ecological conscience, or awareness of one's connection to creation.  We hope to achieve this be offering multi-media educational opportunities throughout the year and by connecting parishioners to events in the community.

HOW TO GET INVOLVED
If you are interested in participating in this ministry, please select it on your Stewardship Renewal Form in the fall or contact Debi Haug.

Support Local Agriculture!
Looking for ways to eat healthier while supporting our local agriculture? Check out these opportunities right in Michiana:

Purple Porch Co-op
“The Purple Porch Co-op is a member-owned food cooperative growing a sustainable local economy. We connect people in Michiana who want local, organic or fair trade food with the growers who produce it. Food grown nearby, by a farmer you know, is fresher, in season, consumes less energy, and is healthier for you and the planet. It’s a win-win: you help local producers feed their families, and they help you feed yours,” the brochure states.
Once you become a member for just $35, order your produce on the weekend and it will be ready for pick-up every Wednesday.   www.PurplePorchCoop.com

Prairie Winds Nature Farm, LLC
Prairie Winds Farm consists of 85 acres of wildlife habitat, fenced pastures, a restored barn, and a working windmill. The owners, Charlotte and Robert Wolfe, are deeply committed to the education and practice of sustainable agriculture and environmental restoration. This year the farm is offering pre-paid Community Supported Agriculture shares for vegetables, eggs, and fruits. A weekly family share lasts 20 weeks (April – Oct.) at a cost of $575. Free farm visits are included in the share price. Delivery is available for a $10/wk fee. For more information, go to www.prairiewindsnaturefarm.com or contact Kathleen Clark, Produce Manager (kpclark@umail.iu.edu).

Ten Commandments for the Environment: Pope Benedict XVI Speaks Out for Creation and Justice
-
Woodeene Koenig-Bricker, 2009

Review of Koenig-Bricker's Ten Commandments for the Environment:
Seasoned author and journalist, Woodeene Koenig-Bricker, skillfully weaves together Pope Benedict's key statements on environmental justice into one volume.  Additionally, she offers commentary that helps to unpack the Ten Commandments for the Environment, which were recently released by the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace.

Koenig-Bricker helps us understand an environmentally responsible lifestyle as a moral responsibility to protect the poor, who suffer most when climate change creates a shortage of resources.  With practical, everyday ideas for reducing one's ecological footprint, this book is a must-read for those seeking the inspiration that the Holy Father radiates to a new generation of Catholics. -www.avemariapress.com
